What does the pink Advent candle mean?

a pink candle

This Sunday, churches and families around the world will light the pink Advent candle. What does this candle symbolize, and how does it differ from the other candles we light during Advent? Thomas D. Stegman, SJ, dean and professor of New Testament in the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College, explains.

“The pink (or, better, rose) candle is lit during the third week of Advent. The third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word for ‘Rejoice.’ The Entrance Antiphon that day starts, ‘Rejoice in the Lord always; I will say it again, rejoice!’ (Philippians 4:4). While the Season of Advent is marked by solemn waiting and yearning for the Lord’s presence and the full manifestation of God’s Kingdom, the eight days leading toward Christmas turn our attention to the first coming of the Lord in the Nativity, a reminder that the Lord is always near—hence, the appropriateness of rejoicing.”
